As reported by Harper’s BAZAAR, Beyoncé has expanded her portfolio yet again with the launch of SirDavis, a groundbreaking whisky brand developed in collaboration with Moët Hennessy. This first-of-its-kind joint venture is a testament to Beyoncé's innovative spirit and her commitment to raising the bar in the spirits industry.
A select group of international journalists had the privilege of attending an exclusive tasting event earlier this summer. The event featured the creators of SirDavis, including Dr. Bill Lumsden, a legendary five-time International Whisky Competition Master Distiller of the Year, and whiskey blender Cameron George, who previously served as Ardbeg’s national ambassador and was recently appointed as the global head of advocacy.
The idea for SirDavis had been in the works for years, stemming from Beyoncé's admiration for Japanese whiskies. This led her to approach Moët Hennessy with the vision of creating a distinctive whisky that reflected her own palate. Concurrently, Moët Hennessy was seeking to expand its presence in the American whiskey market, culminating in the fortuitous partnership that brought SirDavis to fruition. Beyoncé's personal involvement in crafting the recipe ensured that the whisky stayed true to her identity and taste, while maintaining exceptional quality.
In Beyoncé's own words, "I've always been drawn to the power and confidence I feel when drinking quality whisky and wanted to invite more people to experience that feeling. When I discovered that my great-grandfather had been a moonshine man, it felt like my love for whisky was fated. SirDavis is a way for me to pay homage to him, uniting us through a new shared legacy. In partnering with Moët Hennessy, we have crafted a delicious American whisky that respects tradition but also empowers people to experience something new and unique in the category."
SirDavis is not only a testament to Beyoncé's entrepreneurial spirit but also represents an important milestone for Moët Hennessy, as it marks the company's first American spirit brand developed entirely in-house in the United States. The whisky, which is headquartered in Beyoncé's hometown of Houston, is finished, blended, and bottled in Texas, adding a strong sense of place to the brand.
The whisky's name pays homage to Beyoncé's paternal great-grandfather, Davis Hogue, a farmer and moonshiner in the South during Prohibition. Through the SirDavis brand, Beyoncé embraces her Southern heritage and family legacy, making it a deeply personal endeavor for her.
The intricate process of developing the SirDavis recipe involved extensive collaboration between Beyoncé, Dr. Bill Lumsden, and Cameron George, as they sought to create a whisky that embodied Beyoncé's unique preferences. The mash bill includes 51 percent rye and 49 percent malted barley, deviating from traditional American whiskey norms, and exemplifying Beyoncé's commitment to innovation.
The whisky's exceptional quality has been recognized through numerous accolades and awards, including Best of Class for American Whiskey at the 2023 SIP Awards, a gold medal (95 points) at the 2023 New York International Spirits Competition, and a 93-point rating at the 2023 Ultimate Spirits Challenge. These honors further validate the outstanding craftsmanship and excellence embodied by SirDavis.
Cameron George emphasized Beyoncé's integral role in the brand's development, stating, "She is the founder of this brand. She’s had her hand in every piece of this brand, from the liquid profile to the brand world development." Beyoncé's artistic vision is also reflected in the luxurious bottle design, featuring intentional elements that symbolize strength, confidence, and grace, reminiscent of the star's Texas roots.
Dr. Bill Lumsden affirmed the deep personal connection Beyoncé has with SirDavis, emphasizing, "There’s no question this whisky has Mrs. Knowles-Carter’s DNA in it. And I felt that it was critically important to give the product gravitas and authenticity. So, this is her whisky."
