Dr. Dre Getting A “First Ever” For His Trophy Case

Dr. Dre accepts ASCAP award

On June 20th, 2023, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) Rhythm & Soul department announced its intentions to bestow upon Hip-Hop legend, producer extraordinaire, and Beats by Dre mogul, Andre Young better known as “Dr. Dre”, the ASCAP Hip-Hop Icon Award. This is a first ever for Dr. Dre and ASCAP. The ASCAP Hip-Hop Icon Award has never been given before and will be presented to Dr. Dre on Thursday, June 22nd, 2023 at the Rhythm & Soul Music Awards Celebration of 50 Years of Hip-Hop in Los Angeles, California. The ASCAP Hip-Hop Icon Award is awarded to ASCAP members whose musical contributions have made an ineffaceable effect on the art and culture of Hip-Hop.

“Dr. Dre’s groundbreaking early work laid a foundation for hip-hop as we know it today. As a champion for some of today’s biggest artists and a successful entrepreneur, he changed the culture around hip-hop,” said ASCAP Chairman of the Board and President Paul Williams. “Dre continues to be a pivotal figure in the music industry and we are thrilled to recognize him with the inaugural ASCAP Hip-Hop Icon Award as we mark 50 years of hip-hop.”

Dr. Dre’s music career stems back to the World Class Wreckin’ Cru in 1983.

Since then, he has been a member of the iconic N.W.A., introduced the world to Snoop Dogg, co-coordinated the East Coast supergroup The Firm, brought the world Marshall Mathers aka Eminem, Pulitzer Prize winner Kendrick Lamar, and successfully launched Beats Electronics and Beats Music, which he and Interscope’s Jimmy Iovine sold to Apple in 2014 for $3 billion.

Dre has a long list of accomplishments that support his deserving of this great recognition being bestowed upon him by ASCAP at the Rhythm & Soul Music Awards Celebration of 50 Years of Hip-Hop. Congrats Dr. Dre! Well done, well deserved!
