Former Inmates Launch First National Black-Owned Ready-To-Eat Meal Prep Company

As reported by Black Enterprise, three former inmates have successfully transitioned into the world of entrepreneurship by reportedly launching the nation's first Black-owned ready-to-eat meal prep company. As per Black Business, Dave Lewis, Jarrette Atkins, and Fritz Georges, the proprietors and originators of MacroBites, kickstarted their venture in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The company's website clearly states their mission: "To promote health and well-being through mental health, physical health, and nutrition."

Operating on a daily basis, MacroBites functions as a restaurant while also providing catering services to its clientele. In addition, they have established partnerships with local charity organizations to offer complimentary meals to the homeless population in the area.

MacroBites was established in 2019 by Lewis, serving as the president, Atkins as the CEO, and Georges as the sous chef. All three individuals have a history of incarceration, but they refused to let their past define their future endeavors.

Reflecting on his journey, Lewis shared with ABC 7 Eyewitness News, “Trying and failing a few times when I was younger left me in a dark place. But finally understanding there was another way to succeed really pushed me forward."

During their time in prison, Lewis and Atkins pursued culinary courses. While financial success was an aspiration when they started the business, it was not their sole focus. They aimed to showcase to others that even those who have made mistakes can achieve success. Moreover, they were keen on emphasizing the importance of healthy eating to aid against health issues within the Black community.

Atkins expressed, "We fell into the wrong circles and behaviors early on in life. And we were able to come together and grow and build this beautiful company that we have that helps to restore the community and act as representation for the youth so they don’t fall into the same traps that we did."

Georges added, "Don’t be afraid or discouraged because you might not have it all figured out yet. Sometimes that can take a lifetime. The trick is to never give up on your goals and dreams."
