Fortnite Creator, Epic Games Cuts Staff

Updated: Oct 19, 2023

According to a report from Coindesk, video game developer Epic Games is cutting around 16% of its workforce after a metaverse-inspired transition of its online video game sensation Fortnite.

The layoffs affect 830 of Epic Games' employees, CEO Tim Sweeney said in an email to employees on Thursday.

Epic Games has been "growing Fortnite as a metaverse-inspired ecosystem for creators," according to Sweeney. The game's success is now primarily inspired by creator content, which means lesser profits for Epic as the income is more disbursed.

"I had long been optimistic that we could power through this transition without layoffs, but in retrospect I see that this was unrealistic," Sweeney added.

The metaverse is a concept for a digital world where online connection has a deeper meaning and that connection is to the virtual world where things are not always as they seem, but are as they are desired to be, nonetheless.

The metaverse is a multi-layered interactive virtual environment that can be utilized for work, play, socializing, and hosting events. Though still very much in its early stages of advancement, Epic Games' announcement gives proof that major video game developers have strong belief in the Metaverse and have been making the investment to bring it into full working view for the masses.
