Deadline revealed on Thursday, December 19th, that the award-winning musician and producer will be at the helm of this upcoming documentary, which is set to air on NBC on Monday, January 27th—just ahead of Saturday Night Live's 50th-anniversary celebration.
This documentary aims to highlight SNL's pivotal role in showcasing musical talent, noted as a “legendary gig for musicians and bands.” It will chronicle the evolution of the show’s musical performances while unveiling untold stories surrounding some of its most memorable moments in music history.
NBC's ambitious project will run for three hours and feature a star-studded lineup of contributors. Among those appearing and sharing their insights are rock legends and contemporary stars, including Mick Jagger, Dua Lipa, Darryl DMC McDaniels, Tom Morello, Kacey Musgraves, Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish & Finneas, Dave Grohl, Debbie Harry & Chris Stein, MC Sha-Rack, Paul Simon, Chris Stapleton, Justin Timberlake, Lee Ving, Bad Bunny, DJ Breakout, Elvis Costello, and Jack White.
The executive production team for Ladies & Gentlemen…50 Years of SNL Music comprises Thompson, Jon Kamen, Meredith Bennett, Alexander H. Browne, Shawn Gee, and Tariq Trotter, with Rodriguez taking on the role of producer for the project.

“Everyone knows the most famous SNL appearances, whether it’s Elvis Costello, Prince or the Beastie Boys, but they’re the tip of a huge iceberg,” Thompson remarked. “The process of going back through the incredible archival footage was like being in a time machine, DeLorean or other. I’m so happy I went on the trip and now get to share it with everyone.”
