According to a report from GamesHub.com, well known gaming giants are now making some headway in the Web3 space. Blockchain gaming is a wave that is catching on in the ever evolving world of video game play. Three major entities have chosen to enter the space as well and are well on their way. If not familiar with their names, you are likely to be familiar with their work. Does the name Ubisoft ring a bell? If not, how about their Assassin’s Creed game franchise or their Tom Clancey game installments? What about Bandai Namco? Ok, if nothing rings a bell there, have you heard of the Tekken franchise? Better yet, here's a question you can answer “yes” to. Have you heard of Pac-Man? They did that.
Last but not least, the name everyone most likely recognizes, SEGA, the creators of the one and only Sonic the Hedgehog.
The gaming giants have now entered the Web3 space and have found their homes on the Oasys blockchain (OAS).
Oasys, which was established in early 2022, is an EVM-compatible, proof-of-stake, zero-gas-fee blockchain with the backing of numerous video game developers, including Square Enix, Bandai Namco, Sega, and Ubisoft.
Ubisoft has revealed the first trailer for its debut Web3 game, a ‘PvP tactical RPG experimental game’, called Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles which is based on the Oasys blockchain. It’s their latest charge into Web3 content, following the respective failure of its exclusive NFT-based Ubisoft ‘Quartz’ system, which allowed players to acquire unique in-game content for just one of its titles – the disparagingly underwhelming Ghost Recon Breakpoint.
According to Ubisoft, the game will allow players to “assemble a team of mythical Champions, engage in thrilling tactical battles against other players and discover the legends of the dark and mystical world of Grimoria.” The blockchain functionality of the game has yet to be detailed, but it will likely involve those aforementioned champions – potentially in collectible NFT form.
While some gamers have conveyed interest in a substantial company like Ubisoft exploring the prospects of Web3 games, others have shared their dismay, professing Ubisoft doubling down on Web3 technology is contributing to a diminution of reputation and player goodwill.
In late 2022, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot made comments implying the company’s foray into Quartz NFTs was simply research. “We should have said we were working on it,’ he said, ‘and when we have something that gives you a real benefit, we’ll bring it to you.”
I believe it’s a little too early to take score with giants that have literally “been in the game” this long. The evolution of gaming is upon us and I have no doubt that these companies will be present for the ride…
