Tyler Perry’s “Divorce in the Black” Yields More U.S. Prime Video Subscriptions Than Any Other Amazon MGM Movie, According To Studio

Updated: Sep 30

As reported by Variety, Tyler Perry's most recent film, Divorce in the Black, has been a massive success, drawing in a significant viewership within its first few days on Amazon Prime Video. Nielsen's report revealed that the film accumulated over 498 million minutes of watch time during its initial four days of availability. In addition to this impressive viewership, Amazon disclosed that the dramatic film has resulted in a substantial increase in Prime Video sign-ups in the United States, surpassing any other movie produced by Amazon MGM Studios to date.

The film quickly claimed a spot on Nielsen's Top 10 streaming chart, securing the third position for the July 8th-14th viewing period, trailing behind Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F on Netflix and If on Paramount+. With the film's runtime totaling nearly 2.5 hours, the 498 million minutes watched during that timeframe equated to an estimated 3.5 million views, further solidifying its popularity among audiences.

Tracking Divorce in the Black's performance, Luminate's movies chart illustrated the film's continued success, registering 93.2 million minutes watched in its third week on Prime Video, from July 26th to August 1st. It's worth noting that both Variety and Luminate are under the ownership of Penske Media Corp.

Starring Meagan Good as Ava, a young professional facing marital turmoil, the film depicts her journey as her husband, Dallas (portrayed by Cory Hardrict), seeks a divorce. Initially devastated, Ava is determined to salvage their relationship until she uncovers Dallas' deceitful actions that destroyed their marriage and prevented her chances of finding true love. Written and directed by Tyler Perry as part of his four-picture deal with Amazon Studios, the film was also co-produced by Good, Angi Bones, Will Areu, and Dianne Ashford.

Amazon declined to disclose the exact number of new subscribers or specify which Amazon MGM film previously drove the highest subscriber growth. Notably, the company had previously highlighted Road House as a top performer, having amassed over 50 million viewers worldwide in its first two weeks of release. Additionally, it was revealed that a sequel to the Jake Gyllenhaal-led remake is in the works, as announced by Amazon MGM Studio chief Jennifer Salke during the inaugural upfront presentation in May.
