Universal Music Group And Meta Broaden Partnership To Support “Social Music Opportunities”

As reported by Billboard, Universal Music Group and Meta, the parent company of Facebook, have announced an expanded agreement with the aim of advancing social music opportunities for the music major’s artists and songwriters across Meta’s platforms. The new arrangement, disclosed on Monday, August 12, extends to Meta’s platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Horizon, Threads, and for the first time, WhatsApp.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed; however, a joint statement emphasized that the partnership ensures that "artists and songwriters are compensated fairly." Additionally, the two companies will continue their collaborative efforts to address issues such as unauthorized AI-generated content that could impact artists and songwriters.

UMG has previously taken proactive measures with regards to AI in music and has staunchly advocated for the protection of artists and songwriters against what it deems as harmful uses of AI. Notably, UMG has formed partnerships with YouTube on AI principles and an AI Music Incubator, with BandLab to establish ethical practices around music creation, and with Endel on functional music, among other initiatives.

The roots of this expanded agreement go back to 2017 when Facebook and Universal established a global licensing partnership aimed at revolutionizing how people listen to and share music on the social platform.

According to Tamara Hrivnak, VP of Music and Content Business Development at Meta, the renewed partnership builds on the understanding that "music can help connect us and bring fans, artists, and songwriters closer together, not only on established platforms such as Instagram and Facebook, but also in new ways on WhatsApp, and more."

She expressed gratitude to the Universal team and expressed anticipation for the growth of the partnership.
