Verzuz Coming Back

Updated: Oct 19, 2023

What started as a pandemic pastime may be making its way back around minus the pandemic…

As reported by VIBE, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland were presented with the Rock The Bells Cultural Influence Award at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards and during their acceptance speech shared that their platform, Verzuz, will be returning.

“I always dreamed I’d be on stage accepting an award about Hip-Hop. Doing music back in Virginia, I never thought I’d make it, but I’m here,” said Timbaland, during their joint acceptance speech. “Me and my brother created something special, and it ain’t over. Black-owned, Verzuz, me and Swizz Beatz. I’m glad to

Swizz chimed in, backing Timbaland’s statement. “Like Tim said, we own Verzuz again. We got quiet for a minute, but we’re gonna come back strong and show you what it is. That wasn’t just something for the pandemic; that’s something for the world.”

After its launch in March of 2020, Verzuz quickly rose to a household tune-in-time bringing monumental matchups from Johntá Austin vs. Ne-Yo, Jill Scott vs. Erykah Badu, Brandy vs. Monica, Xscape vs. SWV, The LOX vs. Dipset, Beanie Man vs. Bounty Killer, Anthony Hamilton vs. Musiq Soulchild, The-Dream vs. Sean Garrett, Mary Mary vs. BeBe and CeCe Winans, The Isley Brothers vs. Earth, Wind, and Fire, Babyface vs. Teddy Riley, Mario vs. Omarion, and more.

Earlier this year, Swizz hinted at the return of Verzuz after a highly-publicized lawsuit against Triller.

He told VIBE, “The world know if they haven’t heard nothing from Verzuz for this long that, sh*t, something’s cooking. That’s a smart person that’s thinking that something is cooking. It’s been fun. Me and Tim wanted to reevaluate. We started in the basement and it went global, worldwide and sometimes you’ve got to pull it in and give the 2.0 version because you know what people want, you know, what you could have done differently. You know, it’s like starting in a Mom & Pop’s store. Now, it’s like a major thing, so we’ve got to make it an even more major thing. So that’s what we’ve been doing, but when people see the announcements and the lineups, it’s gonna all make sense.”

Since then, a Diddy vs. Jermaine Dupri battle has been confirmed, but no further details as yet.
