YouTube Shorts Getting A New AI Feature

Updated: Oct 4, 2023

According to a report from TechCrunch, on Thursday, YouTube announced a new feature coming to its short-form video platform Shorts that will grant users the ability to utilize AI tools to create videos. The feature, referred to as Dream Screen, will give users the ability to create an AI-generated video or image background by simply typing in what they desire to see.

On Thursday morning at the company’s live event “Made on YouTube”, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan gave an example, you could type in something as random as “a panda drinking coffee,” and then the video image would populate on the screen. The company also suggested other examples, like underwater castles, or imagery that you could have imagined in a dream, like dragons or sci-fi

moonrises.

Mohan said he believed the technology would allow more people to publish on YouTube, without feeling like they have to have a deep understanding of YouTube analytics or a full production studio.

As of today, the Shorts platform is averaging over 70 billion daily views, which reflects an increase from 50 billion daily views in January. YouTube anticipates that AI will increase those metrics further.

“At YouTube, we want to make it easier for everyone to feel like they can create and we believe generative AI will make that possible,” said Mohan.

The feature will first be available to selected creators, followed by an expected rollout early next year.

YouTube expressed, in time the tool will have the capability to reimagine creators’ videos by typing in ideas to edit or remix their content and turn them into something new.
